You can also limit Find Tool searches for item records by statistical code. (Unlike material type definitions, statistical codes do not affect loan limits.) Statistical codes should not duplicate material type, collection, or genre descriptions, but you can use them to make finer distinctions for any of these. For example, a branch might define item statistical codes for Adult Books on Compact Disc and Comic Books, among others. As another example, some libraries use these codes to break out shelving areas into smaller units for reporting purposes, so that Adult Non-Fiction is broken down with a statistical code for call numbers 000-099, another for 100-199, another for 200-299, and so forth. The item statistical codes are displayed for selection in the <b>Statistical code</b> box on the Item Record workform.</p>

<p>You define the available statistical codes in the Item Statistical Class Codes policy table. The policy table can be opened on an organization workform or with the Administration Explorer. If a branch needs statistical reporting, you must specify statistical codes for that branch because they are not inherited from parent organizations.</p>

<p>When you open the policy table at the system level, you can view, add, and change entries for any branch. At the library level, you can view, add, and change entries for any branch that is part of the library. At the branch level, you can view, add, and change entries for the selected branch.</p>

<p><a name="kanchor1248"></a><a name="IX_patron_statistical_codes"></a><a name="kanchor1249"></a><a name="IX_statistical_class_codes"></a><a name="kanchor1250"></a><a name="IX_patrons_overview"></a><a name="kanchor1251"></a><a name="IX_overview_162"></a>Patron statistical codes are useful for demographic or other reports an organization may require. They should not duplicate patron codes, but you can use them to make finer distinctions in patron code categories. For example, statistical codes might be defined for district residence, course major, or society membership. Unlike patron codes, statistical codes do not affect circulation limits or fine calculations. They are used for reporting purposes, and you can limit Find Tool searches for patron records by statistical class (code). The patron statistical codes are displayed for selection in the <b>Statistical class</b> box on the Patron Registration workform- General view.</p>

<p>You define the available statistical codes in the Patron Statistical Class Codes policy table. This table can be opened on an organization workform or with the Administration Explorer. Statistical codes can be defined from the system, library, and branch levels. If a branch needs statistical reporting, you must specify statistical codes for that branch. They are not inherited from a parent organization.</p>

<p>Some Polaris circulation reports depend on patron and item statistical codes. Although statistical codes are not required for Polaris to work, you must define them in the Polaris Administration policy tables Patron Statistical Class Codes and Item Statistical Class Codes to do statistical reporting.</p>
