Information about each e-source includes the name, description, connection URL, message, categories/subcategories, restriction data, and connection data. You can filter the report by organization. To access this report, select <b>Utilities, Reports and Notices</b> from the Polaris Shortcut bar, and select <b>PAC</b> in the Polaris Reports dialog box. <p>This procedure lists how to enter a URL and view source code to set up connection authentication to Gale as an example of get transfer type. See <a href="Set_up_an_e-source_target.htm" class="MCXref xref"><span style="color: Blue;" class="mcFormatColor">Set up an e-source target</span></a> for a detailed procedure on setting up e-sources.</p>

The library may limit access to specific e-sources, often to comply with the terms of the database subscription.</p>

<p>Unlike federated databases, which can be searched simultaneously along with the local catalog, e-source databases are searched separately. When the patron selects an e-source target, the patron uses the provider’s interface for searching (not the PowerPAC interface). When the e-source session is finished, the Polaris PowerPAC session is resumed.</p>

<p><a name="kanchor2149"></a><a name="IX_organizing_1"></a>By default, all e-source targets are displayed as a single (potentially long) list on the PAC e-Source page. To make it easier for patrons to find e-source targets, you can organize the targets list into categories and subcategories. For example, you might organize e-source targets by subject matter categories, such as Business and Education, and perhaps define subcategories within these categories. You can set up categories at the system, library, or branch level. If categories are not set up for an organization, the organization scheme from the parent level is used.</p>

<p>A specific e-source target can be represented in multiple categories. You can add a target to a category when you set up the target, or you can copy targets from other categories. The copied targets are linked, so if you modify a target in one category, the same change is made to the linked targets in other categories. Categories can be copied, pasted, renamed, and deleted.</p>

<p><a name="kanchor2150"></a><a name="IX_organizing_categories"></a>To organize the library’s e-source targets into categories and subcategories:</p>

<li value="1">In the Administration Explorer tree view, open the <b>Profiles</b> folder for the organization, and click the <b>PowerPAC</b> tab in the details view.</li>
|
||||
<li value="2">Double-click <b>Categorization of ESource targets</b>. The <b>ESource Target Categorization</b> dialog box appears.</li>
|
||||
<li value="3">To add a category, do these steps:</li>

<li value="1">Select (highlight) the folder to which you want to add a category. <b>Root,</b> the default category, cannot be copied, deleted, or renamed. If you are adding a new category to the root level, select <b>Root</b>. If you are adding a subcategory to an existing category, select the existing category folder.</li>

<li value="2">Click <b>Add Category</b>. A folder icon appears in the Category tree view, with the cursor positioned to name the folder.</li>

<li value="1">Right-click the e-source target on your PowerPAC e-sources page and select <b>Properties</b> from the context menu. The Properties dialog box displays the URL in the <b>Address (URL) field</b>. </li>

<li value="2">To select the link, position the cursor at the start of the <b>Address (URL) field</b>, hold down the <b>Shift</b> key, and use the down arrow key to select all of the text. </li>

<li value="1">Obtain the following information from the e-source target provider:</li>

<li><a name="kanchor4439"></a><a name="IX_e_source_target"></a><span class="FM_BulletHead">URL for the target’s login page</span> - The complete URL for the target’s <span class="FM_Emphasis">login page</span> (not the site’s home page, or account setup page). Polaris automatically passes your library’s authentication information to this URL.</li>

<li><span class="FM_BulletHead">Connection data parameters</span>  - Connection data parameters are set up in sets consisting of <b>Name</b> and <b>Value</b>. <b>Name</b> is the descriptive field name that the database provider uses to prompt for input. <b>Value</b> is the actual text string that the database provider assigns to your library when the subscription is established.</li>
|
||||

||||
<p class="NoteShade"><b>Example:<br /></b>A vendor requires a user ID and a password to access a database, so you define two parameters (two sets of Name and Value data elements). For the first set, Name is <b>UserID</b>. Value is <b>WESTSIDELIBRARY</b>. For the second set, Name is <b>Password</b> and Value is <b>read</b>.</p>

<li><span class="FM_BulletHead">Transfer type (Get or Post)</span> - The protocol for passing authentication data from your library to the e-source target. <b>Get</b> displays authentication information in the URL string, unless Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is enabled at the server level. <b>Post</b> does not display the authentication information. Most vendors can use the post method. To determine this information yourself, see <a href="Example_ESourceTargetPostTransfer.htm" class="MCXref xref"><span style="color: Blue;" class="mcFormatColor">Example - E-Source Target Post Transfer Type</span></a> and <a href="Example_ESourceTargetGetTransfer .htm">Example - E-Source Target Get Transfer Type</a>.</li>

If you use Polaris PowerPAC on workstations within the library, you may want to list them in the In-House IP Addresses database table. If neither the workstation nor the IP address is found in the system, the user is considered remote.</p>

You might use this setting to limit access to a very specialized (and costly) research site.</p>

<p><a name="kanchor214"></a><a name="IX_connection_requirements"></a>To set up an e-source target for Polaris PowerPAC, you specify how the connection to the database is made, and set any authentication criteria and access restrictions. The terms of your library’s contract with the e-source provider may require authentication from your system when a patron attempts to connect to the e-source. Authentication identifies your library as a subscriber to the e-source provider. When a patron selects an e-source, and the access criteria are met, authentication data for the library is automatically passed to the e-source target for validation, bypassing the provider’s logon page. You can allow access from in-house workstations, remote workstations, or both, and set separate logon requirements for each location. You can further define access by preventing patrons with certain patron codes from accessing an e-source target, and by setting specific IP addresses for access.</p>
